Operating in Haiti since 2004, Acted intervenes simultaneously in emergency in recovery and development. Interventions are focused in areas most affected by the recent crisis: Grand'Anse, South, South-East, Nippes, Centre and West departments. Acted works in partnership with the REACH Initiative by IMPACT, international organisations and civil society organisations.
Earthquakes, drought, hurricanes: Haiti’s geographical location and low response capacity make the country particularly vulnerable to climate change and frequent natural disasters, including earthquakes, droughts and hurricanes. Climate change is contributing to an increase in the frequency of disasters, with consequences lasting over time, in addition to a pre-existing situation of extreme poverty.
The country is experiencing a deep political and security crisis. President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in July 2021 and the temporary government is not unanimously accepted by the population. Poverty and corruption in the country have led to an escalation of violence. In Haiti, nearly 4.3 million people are food insecure, more than 300,000 children are unable to access functional schools, and more than 800,000 people were affected by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake on August 14, 2021.
The various natural disasters that regularly strike Haiti and the pauperization of the country due to its slow development, regularly interrupted and poorly supported by the government creates a complex context in which nearly 98% of the population is constantly exposed to the risks of disasters. The cyclical nature of Haiti’s crises pushes the humanitarian response towards a NEXUS approach. Indeed, the response to urgent needs in terms of food and nutrition insecurity, water, hygiene and sanitation, shelter, economic resilience and education must be done through a long-term approach that integrates disaster risk reduction within each activity.
Acted and its partners are positioned at the heart of this approach by implementing disaster risk reduction projects, emergency response projects and civil society support projects. This holistic approach aims to ensure that the challenges faced by Haiti are addressed in a comprehensive manner.
Acted supports the feminist organizations of the Haitian civil society. This capacity building is done through Acted’s Grassroot Organization Capacity Assessment (GOCA) tool. This tool allows Acted to identify the training needs of CSOs and to provide specific answers for each organization. Then, these organizations are accompanied in the implementation of projects that fall within their mandates. Acted aims to reinforce not only the capacities of CSOs but also to reinforce the capacities to fight for women’s rights, equality and the place and role of women in the Haitian society in general.
